Sorry about the technical difficulties with our recent upgrade, but I wanted to get back to spawning questions from your beloved fans! Are you working on anything juicy at the moment that you can share with us? Anything you would like to point out or tell us of?

Always. :)
First up, look for GUILD WARS 2: GHOSTS OF ASCALON (http://www.forbeck.com/ghosts-of-ascalon/), due out in July. This is the first ever novel based on the hit GUILD WARS MMO and its upcoming sequel. It actually bridges the gap between the two games. Jeff Grubb joined me as co-writer, and it's a great book.
Later this year, watch for AMORTALS (http://www.forbeck.com/amortals/). This is my 14th novel but my first original book — by which I mean: not based on a game or film. It's an SF thriller in which the world's oldest man — Secret Service agent Ronan Dooley — is resurrected after his latest death and sent out to solve his own murder. That's due in the UK in November and the US in January.
I also have essays in FAMILY GAMES: THE 100 BEST (http://www.greenronin.com/store/grr4002) and THE BONES (http://gameplaywright.net/?page_id=958). Plus, I'm writing a regular column for The Escapist (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/Matt%20Forbeck). I recently turned the topic to gaming fiction, and the second bit in that series should be up soon.

Hey Matt, do you plan to be at DDXP in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the end of January?

Matt Forbeck

I don't have any plans for that at the moment, sadly. With five young kids at home, it takes a lot to dislodge me from my home during the school year. Hope all of you who do go have an excellent time though!

Full-time game design since college?! Okay, give us some juicy insight. Aside from really hard work and persistence, what does it take to support a family while working in the game industry?

A spouse with benefits sure helps, as does being able to write fast and on demand. You also need to do all three of a freelancer's jobs:

1) Find the work.
2) Do the work.
3) Get paid for the work.

Every one of these is essential, and you have to be doing each of them at all times. They each require a different set of skills, and most of us are better as some parts than others.

Without breaking any non-disclosure agreements (NDAs for our readers), what sorts of fun projects are you currently working on? Also, do you freelance for a living or do you also hold a "normal" day-job?

At the moment, I'm revising the first novel for Guild Wars 2, set in the time between the best-selling original MMORPG and its sequel. I'm also writing a pair of novels for Angry Robot, a new imprint of HarperCollins.

The first of these is a science-fiction story called AMORTALS. In this world, the wealthy and powerful can back up their memories and restore then into cloned bodies when they die. The world's oldest man—a Secret Service agent indentured into his job by his amortality—is revived to discover that he was brutally murdered, and it's his job to figure out who committed this horrible crime, and why.

The second is an urban fantasy tale called VEGAS KNIGHTS. In this story, a pair of college students learn a bit of magic and decide to go to Vegas on spring break to see if they can strike it rich. It does not, as you might imagine, go well.

Earlier this month, my revision of THE MARVEL ENCYCLOPEDIA hit stores, as did the STAR TREK MISSION UTLITY BELT toy set I designed for Playmates Toys. You can see more details about these on my blog at Forbeck.com.

I am a full-time freelancer and have been for most of the last 20 years. I haven't had a full-time job outside of writing or games since I graduated college back in 1989, and I love it.

What has been your most memorable moment with Dungeons & Dragons? How about gaming in general?

I've had a number of fantastic times with D&D. The last time I played was with my son Marty at Gary Con I, the memorial convention for Gary Gygax. As we wandered in, Steve Sullivan called me over and told me that Frank Mentzer was about to start an original, white-box D&D game, and they had space for us. Frank ran us through part of the first-ever D&D module, The Palace of the Vampire Queen, which was published by some tiny, third-party company. We had a blast.

One of the most memorable games I ever played in was an Everway playtest at the Origins before it came out. Jonathan Tweet ran the game, and Robin Laws, Christian Moore, and myself were the players. Robin had us in stitches with his character, the Eternal Sidekick.
