What do you like about the Forgotten Realms? (via James Wyatt)

James Wyatt recently put up this question on Twitter (http://twitter.com/aquelajames/statu...01461771034624)

    What would your answer be?

For my part, as a fan of the Realms, I love how detailed the world can get. I like intricacies of the setting and how rich and full it is. I realize I may be in the minority, but these little nuances are what I enjoy most about the Forgotten Realms. It is what I feel sets it apart from other campaign settings.

It's detailed development over the decades makes it the best setting for creativity on the DM side and experience on the player side. Basically, it has age on its side.

At risk of sounding like a broken record, I really loved the development and rich lore of the Realms - there's a lot there to fire the imagination (and make you feel like you're part of a much larger community).

The Forgotten Realms I'll admit I never got that interested in for tabletop, but the Neverwinter Nights games have given me a good impression of it; I rather enjoyed collecting the snippets of world history and information that were lying around the place.

As for 4E campaign settings, I have a feeling that Wizards have deliberately kept them all relatively light on information. I bought the 4E Eberron campaign guide based solely on my interest in D&D Online, and that doesn't go into a great deal of detail.

The rich culture, the variation in peoples, the religions, landscape, and to be honest, when it is played by the right people, the sheer realistic complexity of the entire world. It's not all blast with magic, hack with swords and deliver the *insert item here*.

It is a world sculpted by love, loss and bright hopes for the future. It holds deep scars in history like any country in the real world. It is one where People can challenge Gods, and where one can trade freely. Although, my opinion may be bias by the amount of time I spend on the Sword Coast

I like it because it reflects the world we live in, and give us the ability to try new ways to sculpt our own future. (too deep, yeah ... my bad.)

    I like Faiths & Avatars.

It remains that perfect combination of history and religion that can fill the background of hundreds, if not thousands, of campaigns and adventures. It remains my single favourite RPG product of all time.

(To more specifically answer the original question, I like FR's history and religion because I can use it as background and plot material.)

My favorite would be The Underdark, specifically Drow culture. Knowing that the further you go into the Underdark, the more intense and frighting the creatures become is a excellent way to challenge my players (who aren't as familiar with The Realms and Underdark as I am!).

It's got to be the lore - Look at all the AD&D sourcebooks we had!! FRCS is definitely an influence for my Pathfinder Golarion sandbox stuff I'm planning at the moment
