    Campaign Worlds

What is your favorite campaign worlds and why? I know a lot of members here love the Realms, but are there others? What are the first kinds of topics you look for that capture your imagination?

    Cool

Forgotten Realms: It provides virually a bridge to everything else D&D that I love, Magic exploration in it's own world and possible expansion to Spelljamming, Ravenloft, and Planescape campaigns as well.

The Star Wars Saga: I love playing Jedi, flying in starships, and being in differant eras. I also love designing my own starships.

Council of Wyrms: Not technically a true campaign but it is awesome playing as dragons.

Spelljamming: For the same reason I enjoy Star Wars, ship combat and exploration.

Planescape: I loved the old 2e version that had factions steming from Sigil. You could go anywere and battle the Gods or Archfiends depending on your luck.

Car Wars: It was awesome constructing your own cycle, car, bus, tank, boat, hovercraft, or other vehicle, give it armor and weapons and fight in duels or on the open road.

I love Greyhawk but I'm not sure how much more I want to see on it. Having some of the older obscure settings has my vote (Mystara).

Aside from the Realms, D&D settings in order of preference...

    1) Greyhawk
    2) Mystara
    3) Golarion

    Non-D&D

    1) Glorantha (Runequest)
    2) Young Kingdoms (Stormbringer)
    3) Middle earth (MERPs)
Even god can have an off day

    After the Forgotten Realms:

Greyhawk: the first ever AD&D world I played in that wasn't homebrew. I loved the strong medieval feel to it, the "Old World" sort of vibe I haven't found in another campaign world really. I also loved how such large nations had low populations...so you had lots of places "in between" to place adventure.

Mystara: I never understood the organization of the kingdoms, but having someone run a game there was nice because it was easy to get to any sort of "theme" adventure you wanted to make. Mystara is also where Dalor Darden came from: the Empire of Alphatia...the flying ships, dragon-riding wizards and more were awesome.

Shameless plug for my own world here: http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/world-of-aerk (and a map: http://www.obsidianportal.com/campai...aerk/maps/9006 ) Playing here as a DM through all variations of D&D (and even other rules sets a couple of times) has enabled me to really explore world creation without restriction. It is really nice to not have to worry about conflicting lore and just let the mind race and put out whatever comes.

My favorite Sci-Fi game was actually Traveller 2300. I didn't like the Kafer; but the "low-tech" of such a space game was really appealing to me.

Very close behind that is Star Wars d6. Sure, lots of dice; but I like games without levels or real classes. With it, we actually started once on a Primitive World (Medieval Technology, with Force Powers...makes for fun!)...and then we went from there.

A secret favorite game of mine was "Conan" from TSR. Another fantasy game without levels or classes at all. I'm a sucker for Conan anyway...so this game was sweet. I actually ran a campaign in my own World of Aerk using this rules set...awesome game...if you can find a copy I suggest getting it pronto!

    EDIT:

I totally forgot Middle-Earth. I made a 86 page conversion book for it using a lot of ICE (Iron Crown Enterprises) for a 2e AD&D game that I set in the Fourth Age of Middle Earth. I love the world of Tolkien...but I didn't like the clunky feel of the MERP rules.

    A few ones not mentioned

    1. Tekumel (Empire of the Petal Throne)
    2. Athas (Dark Sun although the maps of it cover a pretty small region)
    3. Scarred Lands (Ghelspad, Second continent was not so hot)

Honorable mention to Glorantha (Prax and Dragon Pass were cool, rest was too werid). Forgotten Realms is OK, but as my friend refers to it the "Way too much known about it" Realms requires a doctoral disserations worth of reading just to keep track of what's going on. Greyhawk has similar problems. Bill Webb used to have a little piece of his campaign on the Necromancer game site, but Necro games and it successor Frog god games have sensibly avoided issuing an official campaign setting, so I happily built my own, and pasted their modules into it where needed.

By the way very cool map on your portal site. Did you draw it? What tools did you use?
