Laid back stoner and psychedelic explorer.
Cure Light Wounds for me.
Sure, MM, Fireball, etc...are a lot of fun, but I never found myself actually playing with those spells. My spellcasting characters were always Clerics, so there you go.
If we're talking DM running NPCs then it's definitely Magic Missile. It’s a lot of fun to run encounters where mid-level PCs (in a 3.5 game) stumble upon a bunch of robed skeletons (say 10 or so) in an abandoned mage tower.
The PCs think “meh, no problem” and say as much at the gaming table. On my turn the skeletons all produce wands of magic missile that fire at least three missiles apiece.
Target just one PC and watch all the players reevaluate their assessment of the situation.
Realmslore is a lot like a fractal: the thinner you slice it the more details you get. This is why there are no absolutes in the Realms.
I must hit my threes each day!
Charm Person
It was just an amazing spell. In 2nd edition a 1st level wizard has a 50% chance of succeeding in charming a 9th level fighter who has an 18 in every stat (excluding any gear and racial traits).
NPCs with lower INT were awesome - let you get by so many encounters when used correctly.
Grease...oh i'm sorry that yo can't hang onto that bug old club Mr. Giant!
Dispel Magic
I'm sorry. . .what spell?
Lightning bolt was great because the line area of effect gave you a strategic option that no longer exists in D&D. All areas of effect are now burst or blast. Or wall. No lines. It's a shame.
Dispel was always cool, I can definetly see that in the top ranks.
@GMonkey - As for lightning bolt, I'm not following. It is a line-of-sight spell. No burst or blast.
Standard Action Ranged 10 Target: One, two, or three creatures
Attack: Intelligence vs. Reflex
Hit: 2d6 + Intelligence modifier lightning damage.
Miss: Half damage.
You can even alter it to allow for it to be line-of-effect instead (thus bypassing walls, etc...).

I think I misinterpreted the question "traditional" spell. In previous editions, Lightning Bolt had been a line area of effect, which doesn't exist in 4e. That's why I said "was" great. I enjoy 4e, but although there's a lot about it I like better, there are also things I miss.
charm person.
