I am curious as to why there would be so much negativity directed at the class or WOTC for that matter, when all they have done is left players with another option. If you don't like the options then don't use them. I appreciate that they have given players so many options between regular classes and essentials classes and continuous support on a monthly basis. This is a new build with a wealth of opportunities in the hands of a crafty player. It is not a re-hash of swordmage whatsoever and is a welcome addition to any party that has a leader who grants basic attacks. If there were no options people would complain. Be happy and stop complaining as a community. It has never been better for gamers than it is today and thanks to all the people who do this not for the money but for the love they have for the game. Sorry I went off on a tangent there.

The argument in opposition is two-fold:

    1. They could have done something better than this.
    2. And they expect us to pay money for it.

If it were free, it wouldn't matter nearly as much.

To be fair, there are many who like the class. It is usually the case that only the negative comments come out. People who are not affected have no incentive to go online and tout its design (unless they are already very active in said community). You are paying for a service, not a product. As a season-ticket holder with the Washington Redskins, I hate how my seats are made of hard plastic. But you know, it's not why I go to the games or pay the money that I do. I pay because of all of the other awesome benefits; the experience, game, and other fans.

You cannot possibly expect that you will like everything that WotC produces. It's an option, one that can be ignored at that.

    I like the bladesinger class.

since its a wizard it can take wizard paragon paths and such.... wish it had access to swordmage paragon paths too( without mc feats)

As someone with a deep love of the arts, especially singing, I am forced to hate sports due to my experiences in Chorus in high school. I am also forced to hate Band. Bastards got all the the funding and the events and we got nothing. :| Because of, yeah, sports. >:|

Here's the main problem from the Charop people:

1.) Bladesong spell only trigger on the BS's turn so Warlord shenannigans doesn't apply.

2.) Class features that promote two stats that are closely linked (Dex/Int) hinder the classs big-time in other areas such as non-armor defense (or NADs).

3.) and the biggest complaint, wizard encounters-as-dailies. While I think it fits thematically since they work both sword and spell, they're not as compitant as wizards in this area. However, from a mechanical standpoint, it would've been easier to say Encounters as Encounter or Dailies as Dailies. Espically for MC reasons and Paragon Multiclass reasons.

4.) the theme can be better accomplished, mechanically speaking, with other alternatives (such as Warlock|Rogue or Swordmage|Wizard hybrids).

5.) Their MBA aren't "arcane" in nature and thus shut down a lot of feat opportuinities to optimize the heck out of this class.

6.) Their role as "Controller" is sub-optimal at best and the class displays a far more potency for a "Striker" style.

I, OTOH, don't adhere to everything Charops say and Know that from their POV they try to eek out every single way to make a class uber-optimized and fit the fluff to fit that. Even if that means dropping Intelligence all together and use the feat Melee-Training (any other stat but Int) to fuel your MBAs. OR they go with Half-elf and dilitantee (sp?) to get a Con-based attack such as Eldritch Strike.

I'm a grognard in my feelings towards the Bladesinger and would require it in my games to be an elf of some type (eladrin, elf, half-elf, drow, Revenant [past life an elf]) that sort of thing.

I also understant that the Devs don't make classes built to the needs of Charops nor should they. The bladesinger offers an out-of-the-box melee controller that is flavorful and interesting. It's not the paragon of optimization but I think more people are out to have fun and not "winning" the game.

On a side note about sports:

I used to be a big Seahawks fan but living in Pittsburgh my whole life and the crap game that was Superbowl XL has made me leave the NFL by the wayside. Besides, they're a bunch of cry-babies to begin with.

The problem with the Char Op boards is that they don't account for the intangibles. Their methodology is purely based on the game as a skirmish/miniatures game. They don't take into account the utility of some game content--which can prove more useful than a very high DPR.

That being said, what they do best is good for the game. Take what you read there with a grain of salt. Their recommendations are not always the best thing for your campaign. Unless your campaign is 100% combat.

Last night I had two at my table. The one I spoke about earlier who did not play very smart last time and the 10 year old from my Saturday game, he is a big memoir 44 player so he is big into tactical strategies.

One of them played very well despite being worried about all he damage he was taking from tankards being tossed around the room and chairs being swung at him. The kid from last week hid pretty well.

Lightning Ring works pretty well, when the opponent is not a rowdy drunkard.

I looked deeper at the Bladesinger (I'm playing one soon) and now I'm really confused on the backlash. I love the class. It's what the swordmage should have been all along.
