I firmly believe a Dungeon Master has the obligation to ensure things are fair and fun.
I am a firm believer that it is the DMs duty to support the Heros.
What does that mean?
It means that DMs need to remember that this is a game about Heros. PERIOD.
This game is not to see if you can build an encounter so hard is wipes parties, it is not to make "ultra-cool" NPCs who can whip the parties ass or NPC allies who overshadow the Heros. Your player's Heros are the stars of the show. If an enemy crit would lay low the healer right when the party needs healing most, that crit takes the spotlight off the players. A bad skill check would result in a non-heroic death, the skill check takes the spotlight off the Heros.
It is our job, as DMs, to ensure that the Heros are heroic! If my dice are hot and the players are not, tone my dice down. My DCs are just a little too high? Drop 'em a few notches. Monster is just way to tough, subtract a few HP. Don't tell the players you are doing this (maybe after the fact, if they question you) as it takes the spotlight of the Heros.
I think I can sum up what I am trying to get across in a simple sentence.
"A good DM almost wins, every time..."
Just my 2 cents.
always.
