What is your favorite D&D deity and why? What makes them so cool to you? What types of campaigns do you prefer when it comes to deities? Do you like those with a large variety, or do you prefer limited?

Oi, Boldrei from Eberron a lot of the time. I love the idea of a wandering devotee of the Goddess of communities. I like the collective churches from that setting. I've really had a strong urge to play a character in a campaign with a strong central church with either a single god or a pantheon akin to the Catholic/Christian one (the trinity of main gods, and an array of lesser gods in the angles and saints, where devotion is to the church as a whole, with prayers being directed to the main gods by way of the accessories.) It wouldn't have to be a Christian setting, but that sort of structure. Kathrine Kurtz's Deiryni setting or the Eddings's Elinium books.

I prefer campaigns with a large variety of cultures, each with their own deity or deities. I think some of the best seeds for roleplaying in campaigns come from the religious and philosophical back story of the various cultures.

My favorite D&D deities would include Boccob of Greyhawk, Waukeen of the Forgotten Realms, and Primus of Planescape.

The Raven Queen and Kelemvor, because I'm a boring, ordinary person.

Corellon Larethian, because deep down beneath my cynical, snarky, bitter exterior, I am a pansy prancing artistic tree-hugging elf with plenty of exciting gender issues, and Corellon hits just about everything that truly matters to me on a personal level. Especially the merciful, humble, open to new ideas slant they had on him in the 2E era. He/she/it's just plain inspiring to me.

Other favorites include Olidammara, Erevan Ilesere, Labelas Enoreth, Liira and of course Vhaeraun. And I have a fond pity for Selvetarm.

My favorite D&D Deity of all time - LOLTH - FINALLY a Greater Goddess as she should be in 4E - she is the ultimate manipulator who has used other gods as pawns against her enemies - She has crushed every other god in the drow pantheon - corrupted an entire subrace of elves - slew multiple gods including her 2 children who were also gods - travels the Planes in a bad ass Spider Walker ship - in drow form she is the sexiest female goddess - has all the demons in the Abyss scared of her

She is simply a sexy badass!

Well, she's sexy in humanoid form.

I agree but didn't include Lolth because she's not LFR-legal. I just made a stupid assumption. I'm one of those Drow-lovers from 1st edition days.

Vecna.

As far as FR is concerned, I like Jergal, Ilmater, and Kossuth.

I played a Lawful Neutral Necromancer who worshiped Jergal in a 2e campaign. He was devoted to the orderly and proper eschaton.

I am old and always loved Boccob the Uncaring. A diety that doesn't get involved or muck up too much of my idea of what they are all about. I typically run games with less in the way of dieties and pantheons all the time and use spirits, forefathers, elements, cults, and some churches more centralized. I have never liked the idea of a god for everything.

Olidammara. Closest D&D deity to EverQuest's Bristlebane there is.

Was very sad he got dropped in fourth edition.

Great choice. That was an unfortunate drop but an excellent opportunity for you to add that into your own campaign. Doors are never locked to us, we just haven't picked them yet.

By far my favourite is Corellon. I like the mystic aura he has around him.

I will go with Erathis,

Perhaps because I'm not a big outdoors person, so I like the whole "take over the wilderness stuff"

Honorable mention I believe goes to the Red Knight in the Forgotten Realms. The whole wargame style campaign with an order of knights and a battle tested commander empowered by her diety was always appealing. I do have a wee bit of favor for Erathis as well for the same reasons as mentioned above. Conquer the unknown dark continent sort of feel.

and who said the laughing rogue was dropped in 4e?

he;s a greyhawk deity and greyhawk has not seen a 4e version yet.

ummm I wonder what the number count would be at the time this thread sees its end.

Dragonlance - the whole pantheon. Especially the different gods of magic for different alignments. if i had to pick one though it would probably be Kiri-Jolith or Takhisis

The Realms - Oghma, Illmater, Clangeddin Silverbeard, Elistraee, Malar, Solonor Thelandira, Velsharoon.

PHB - the new bane.

In general, I prefer a smaller number of deities/divine forces, unless the game is set up to focus on divine challenges.

I love Eberron's overall religious picture, especially the distinction between 2 very different kinds of good/pro-civilization religious beliefs. I much prefer that to the "god for everything" set up of the Realms.

Outside of explicitly WotC/TSR D&D, I loved Green Ronin's Book of the Righteous. I also like the (apparent) simplicity of the Oronthon/Adversary/Uedii setup in Sepulchrave's famous Story Hour at ENWorld.
